My 50-day test
Koanna infrared sauna blanket: my experience after about 20 sessions
I used the blanket about 20 times over 50 days, usually for 30 minutes at the highest setting. The heat felt even, and I found sessions after hard training pleasant for muscle soreness and back tension. These are personal observations, not proof of a medical effect.
How I used it
With underwear and towels inside the blanket, preferably on a bed or sofa rather than a hard floor.
Cleaning
I wiped and aired the inside after each use. A thorough clean took me less than five minutes.
My conclusion
A convenient heat and relaxation tool, but not a replacement for exercise or a traditional sauna.
Evidence and disclosure
Findings from Finnish sauna studies cannot simply be transferred to an infrared blanket. Koanna supplied the blanket free of charge; the video itself was not paid for. I may receive a commission from purchases through the partner link.

Benefits of Koanna Red Light Therapy
European red light therapy panels for recovery, skin health and cellular energy – 10 % off with code LONGEVITY10.
Red Light & Near Infrared
Depending on the model, Koanna combines visible red and near-infrared light; check the specifications for exact wavelengths.
More Cellular Energy
Photobiomodulation is studied in connection with mitochondrial processes; this does not establish a benefit for every device.
Faster Recovery
Heat and red light are commonly used around training and recovery; outcomes depend on the device, dose and individual.
European Quality
Koanna is a European wellness brand; check current product details and warranty terms in the shop before buying.
Skin Health & Collagen
Red light is studied for skin-related applications, but findings cannot be applied broadly to every product.
Mitochondria Boost
The biological mechanisms of photobiomodulation are still being studied; this page is not medical advice.

What infrared applications do – and do not do
Heat exposure briefly raises skin perfusion and heart rate and is experienced as relaxing by many. The well-documented cohort data on regular sauna use come from Finnish studies with traditional saunas, not infrared blankets — transferring those results is plausible but not proven.
Sweating is not detox. Weight lost after a session is fluid and returns as soon as you drink.
- Clarify with a physician in case of cardiovascular disease, pregnancy or medication affecting thermoregulation.
- Drink enough before and after each session.
Using red light properly: distance, duration, wavelength
The two common wavelengths do different jobs: 660 nm (visible red) is absorbed superficially and is mainly used for skin and connective tissue, while 850 nm (near-infrared) penetrates deeper and targets muscle and joints. Panels covering both wavelengths therefore serve both use cases – which is why combination panels usually make more sense for beginners than 660 nm-only devices.
In practice, what has settled for us: 10–15 minutes per zone, roughly 15–30 cm distance, eyes closed or goggles on for facial sessions. More is not better – photobiomodulation follows a dose-response curve where overly long sessions tend to reduce the effect. Consistency over weeks matters more than one long session.
For context: red light therapy is a wellness application, not a substitute for medical treatment. With skin conditions, photosensitising medication or during pregnancy, check with a doctor first. If you also use sauna or cold exposure, schedule the red light session before training or in the evening recovery window.
